Mike Carpenter

Experience that matters.

Mike Carpenter has a long history of service dating back to his time in Vietnam where he served as a captain. Mike first became involved in politics in 1974 where he served in the Maine House of Representatives and later as a member of the Maine Senate until 1986. While working for the people of Northern Maine in Augusta Mike served as a member of the agriculture, judiciary, and transportation committees. From 1982-1984 Mike served as the Assistant Majority Leader of the Maine Senate and from 1984-1986 he served as the chairman of the Judiciary Committee.


In 1989 Mike returned to Northern Maine to serve as Aroostook County Assistant District Attorney. Here Mike was responsible for the preparation, processing, and trial of all criminal offenses in Aroostook County.


While working as Assistant DA Mike also ran a successful law practice and lectured at the University of Maine, Augusta. In 1991 Mike would again be called to serve the people of Maine, when the Maine Legislature chose him to be the next Attorney General for the state. Here Mike was the State’s chief law enforcement officer and legal representative. He supervised a staff of over 150 employees and was responsible for the development, implementation and management of a $12 million dollar budget.


While serving in Augusta the past three and a half years Mike has been extremely busy and is proud to have maintained a perfect record of attendance when key issues are being voted on. He has sponsored legislation to update Maine’s explicit images law to protect our children from indecent exposure to uncensored materials. Mike has voted to strengthen Maine’s clean election laws has worked to protect Mainer’s from predatory banks. Finally, Mike has fought to enact the Opportunity Agenda. A budget that works for all Mainers by lowering middle class taxes, providing funding for education and upgrades to critical infrastructure.


Mike is the son of potato farmers and a lifelong resident of Aroostook County. He resides in Houlton with his wife, Joanne, with whom he has three children. In addition to his law practice, Mike and his family operate Carriages of Acadia, a national park concession managed by his daughter, Emily, in Acadia National Park.
